Modeling Massive Stars with Rotation: the Case of Nitrogen Enrichments
نویسنده
چکیده
Recently, the concept of rotational mixing has been challenged by some authors (e.g. Hunter et al. 2008). We show that the excess N/H is a multivariate function f(M, age, v sin i, multiplicity, Z). To find a correlation of a multivariate function with some parameter, it is evidently necessary to limit as much as possible the range of the other involved parameters. When this is done, the concept of rotational mixing is supported by the observations. We also show that the sample data are not free from several biases. A fraction of ∼ 20 % of the stars may escape to the relation as a result of binary evolution.

Stellar evolution with rotation V . Changes in all the outputs of massive star models
Grids of models for rotating stars are constructed in the range of 9 to 120 M at solar metallicity. The following effects of rotation are included: shellular rotation, new structure equations for non–conservative case, surface distortions, increase of mass loss with rotation, meridional circulation and interaction with horizontal turbulence, shear instability and coupling with thermal effects, ...
متن کاملThe VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars: rotation and nitrogen enrichment as the key to understanding massive star evolution
Rotation has become an important element in evolutionary models of massive stars, specifically via the prediction of rotational mixing. Here, we study a sample of stars including rapid rotators to constrain such models and use nitrogen enrichments as a probe of the mixing process. Chemical compositions (C, N, O, Mg and Si) have been estimated for 135 early B-type stars in the Large Magellanic C...
متن کاملMass loss of rotating stars at very low metallicity
Some indirect observations, as the high fraction of Be stars†at low metallicity, or the necessity for massive stars to be important sources of primary nitrogen, seem to indicate that very metal poor stars were fast rotators. As a consequence of this fast rotation, these stars, contrarily to current wisdom, might lose large amounts of mass during their lifetime. In this paper, we review various ...
متن کاملStellar evolution with rotation VIII : Models at Z = 10 − 5 and CNO yields for early galactic evolution
We calculate a grid of star models with and without the effects of axial rotation for stars in the mass range between 2 and 60 M⊙ for the metallicity Z = 10 . Star models with initial masses superior or equal to 9 M⊙ were computed up to the end of the carbon–burning phase. Star models with masses between 2 and 7 M⊙ were evolved beyond the end of the He–burning phase through a few thermal pulses...
متن کاملChemical Abundances and Yields from Massive Stars
Stellar rotation produces an internal mixing of the elements due to shear instability and meridional circulation. This leads to observable N/C enhancements in massive stars above about 7–9 M⊙. Rotation also favours mass loss by stellar winds. Mass loss effects dominate for masses above 30 M⊙, while mixing dominates below that limit. The effects of mixing are also much larger at lower metallicit...
